A premarital agreement (or prenup) is an agreement that defines how property will be acquired during marriage, and how property will be divided upon dissolution of the marriage. Domestic partners may enter into a pre-registration agreement.

Premarital agreements can help to strengthen a marriage, by permitting the couple to discuss money issues before they get married. Premarital agreements can also significantly reduce litigation costs and unnecessary aggravation if a marriage ends.

You should speak with an experienced family law attorney if you are considering a premarital agreement.
